How would you like your veggies fertilized with ... toxic sludge?

Yeah ... I'm pretty sure I had the same initial reaction you did. But apparently there are people out there -- people like the former mayor of San Francisco, for example -- who think that this "fertilization" of vegetables with toxic sludge is a good idea.

This sludge, containing a myriad of pathogens and other dangerous chemicals, is basically all the stuff the sewage treatment plant removes from the sewage. And some local officials have succeeded in convincing farmers to dump this rejected sewage all over their vegetable crops. Toxic sludge is exactly how it sounds: dangerous. And personally, I wouldn't want to eat vegetables that had been spread with this stuff, "fertilizers" or not. What do you think?

Information on this use of toxic sludge can be found here. For more recent news, click here.
